Hmmm...

How about the following:

You are probably incorrect about most things you beleive. Take time to examine your thoughts. Write your logic out on paper. look for flaws or gaps. If you are angry, you are irrational and your assumptions can't be trusted. Do not trust your own blind belief.

nobody wants to teach the world to sing?
Or to love?
Or about the nature of reality?
These all seem to be catchphrases, but what would you teach the world?

If you see someone of worth; study how you might emulate!
If you see someone who is unworthy; examine your own character

Tolerance...

I would like to teach eveyone more Tolerance... IT seems to be the lack therof that gets us as a society into so much trouble.

totally agree with you there Rob Masson, the world would be better without the lack of it. It actually ties in to what Infomaniac said:

"Walk a day in another person's shoes before you pass judgement."

If you'd walk in everyone's shoes for a day, you will definitely be more tolerant when you return to your own (shoes).

Oh, by the way.

The one thing I'd teach would be agnostic atheism and pragmatism. Could fit in one package, right?
- 27 February, 2007
Rob Masson says

DS,

Instead of teaching them to be "Agnostic Athiests" I vote for teaching them to be BRight.. *grin* But I am biased.. *LOL* And yes, it could certainly fit into one packages.. Tolerant Brights! Let's start planning the World Tour! *grin*

Let me come back to that. I do not intend to say that religious individuals cannot be pragmatic!
- 27 February, 2007
Rob Masson says

DS,

Well it is an interesting issue. First of all let's set the context. If we are defining Pragmatic in the most casual sense then anyone can be pragmatic in their everyday life irregardless of their religion. Pragmatism in that sense simply means being willing to do the required thing to get through the situation.

But Pragmatism on a more philosophical scale is a little different. In a sense, as a Bright, I think of Pragmatism as being the key to beleiveing in a Naturalistic view of the Universe in which an external, supernatural entity is not required to explain anything. Pragmatism leads one to a very practical, explainable view of the Universe and does not accept any Dogma. Most organized religions have some basic tenets that they view as untouchable and rely on Faith in their followers to uphold those beliefs. A pragmatism will always look at new contradictory evidence and be willing to revise their world view to accomodate it and as a result has little room for Faith or Dogma.

I would also contend that being a Pragmatist also leads one to realize the value of Tolerance. Intolerance ultimately can only lead to conflict and a less than optimal outcome.

I would stay away from anything other than general lessons. Teaching everyone in the world Athiesm would simply be teaching everyone to think more like we personally think. To think that this would improve the world has a certain degree of hubris to it.

ATI,

you mean we can't simply BEAT Tolerance into the general intolerant populace... *blink blink* Oh yeah... I see the contradiction now... *grin*

- 27 February, 2007
Rob Masson says

@ATI,

Well you want to do yourself in a way that really has meaning.. *grin* I loved the scene in A Scanner Darly when the charater plans out his suicide to make just the right statement. He gets dressep up, partially completes a protest letter to Exxon for cancelling his credit card, has a copy of The Fountainhead tucked under his arm.. And then realizes that he only has crappy Thunderbird Wine and doesn't want to do out drinking crap so has to delay everything until he can get a decent Merlot..

Now THAT is stylin' on the Outbound Train! *grin*

I think i would teach everyone respect. Respect would lead to tolerance and in some cases even love. Even if everyone tolerated everyone else, they would still fuck each other over unless they had sufficient respect not to.
- 27 February, 2007
Ati says

None of our solutions really address the root problem, it seems.

As for as I can tell, the root problem is that humanity in general is populated by egotist, emotionally unstable, intolerant, nut-jobs.

(I include myself under than generalization, although I do consider myself to be somewhat better than most in some of those areas.)
- 27 February, 2007
