Suggestion: Topic posts in mulitple communities - 29 January, 2007
Ryan says
Add Karma and Comments if you think this is a good suggestion!

So, say we got a Topic called *Trouble insalling PHP on Windows* it might be helpful to post that topic in both PHP and Windows Communities right?

What does everyone think? Will this make a valuable addition? What priority should it have?

While I think in theory it is not a bad idea, I think it would split up the discussion too much at this time, if we could create a redirect topic that was in two communities at once but shared the same replies, that would be crazy awesome, but probably hard to implement.

That's what I mean. It would be posted in two communities but share the same thread. I think it would be cool to bring two different communities into the same discussion to capitalize on their different strengths.

I do not know how hard it is but maybe I can think about it. I don't know the database schema though.

Oh, well then that is a great idea!

Maybe you could just make one a redirect or something, and post a shadow topic in another group?

Hey, I really like this idea. I was about to dismiss it because it might confuse people (one thing that scares me beyond anything else) but redirecting, as Constantine suggested, is a great idea. But you know, this might just create spam. Any ideas on reducing the spam?

Well I guess I would limit it to three communities, and maybe allow the community creator to dismiss redirects that he/she finds irrelevant? I don't know really, combating spam is hard work. And maybe limit the amount of multi-group topics you can post per hour or something?

Community moderation will at some stage become a must, be it user or owner based. This might be something to consider before expanding spam capabilities.

Well the community is already moderated by moderators, community owners and topic owners. This feature was just added a couple of days ago. A person who posts a topic can delete any thread within it. A person who owns the community can delete any topic or any thread within that community. A person who is the moderator can delete any topic or reply anywhere on the network. So I wouldn't worry too much about this.

I am really interested in adding this feature. Instead of three, we give the user the option to post to just one other community.

This would be really cool, but if it ends up a little to unrestricted it could make it so that communities didn't matter at all, also, if you were a member of one community, but not the other, would you post it as a Guest or as yourself?
